The Amenity Tree Industry is not governed. You do not need a license to work in this industry any one can pick up a chainsaw and work on trees.
Because there is no one policing this industry it is hard for the client, (yourself) to pick a quality contractor.
There is an industry qualification; Arboriculture, as part of this qualification there are 6 levels of certification:
Certificate 1arborists are new to the industry and have little experience, they may not even hold a chainsaw operators certificate.
Certificate 3 and 4 Arborists should display moderate industry experience and the ability to perform tree surgery of the ground (climber)
Certificate 5 Arborists must display vast industry experience, be competent in all aspects of physical tree work, display managerial and office related skills and be able to carry out tree assessments and write tree reports.
Certificate 6 is a teaching level certificate
Here is the catch, any person qualified in any of the above certificate levels can legally call themselves an Arborist, they can operate there business irrelevant of there skill set, any ware in Australia and the client often becomes the victim of insurance claims and incomplete jobs.
This link will take to you, to a video posted on U Tube.
Have a look at the OHS non conformance issues See if you can find:
! The car that without notice without notice will not be able to move until the crane is dismantled about 1/2 hr
! The 2 employees without there safety helmets, no safety glasses or screens, no safety boots, no longsleeves and no chainsaw pants.
! The dogman or crane rigger with no helmet, ear muffs and his safety glasses protecting his peek hat not his eyes.
! The wood chipper operators with no helmets, safety glasses or screen, no longsleeves and no chainsaw trousers.
! The three workers, working under a live, suspended crane load.
! The tree climber without his safety glasses or screen and what looks to be a non rated pole strap.
! The worker inside the back of the truck with no PPE guiding a crane loaded log into the back of a truck with no escape root if log lets go
! The tree climbers rough exit from a base cut resulting in the chainsaw almost contacting his legs.
! The stump grinder has no helmet, no safety screen, no safety glasses nor safety barrier screens.
This operation was completed in the rain with no traffic control in fact there is not even a witches hat around the truck.
If any one of the persons working on this job got hurt they would be unlikely to receive Workers Comp benefits due to there negligent OHS standards.
If they do not qualify for Workers Compensation payments they try to sue the client (you).
